After 2 weeks of working nights in the windowless basement of Chicago's iconic Board of Trade Building, I feel like I've emerged straight from the Century of Progress!  I had a lot of fun updating the 15-year-old chalkboard menus in Cellar's Market, the cafeteria-style restaurant in the CBOT's basement.  I'm certain there must be at least a few traders and office workers who have eaten breakfast and lunch here every workday for the past 40 years.  What a pleasure to be able to give so many regular customers an exciting fresh look to their favorite spot.

]]><![CDATA[New artistic ventures: Macy's Flower Show]]>Thu, 29 Mar 2012 20:47:54 -0600http://www.amanda-paulson.com/1/post/2012/03/macys-flower-show.htmlI was so honored to accept a position as a Designer for this year's Macy's Flower Show, "Brasil: Gardens in Paradise"!  I'm still in recovery from a week of brutally hard (and dirty!) work installing the gardens.  My team was responsible for "Brasilia", a modern garden in the style of the famous Brazilian landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx, as well as the "Bahia" gardens, mimicking the more urban regions of Brasil.

I don't think I've ever been so exhausted, dirty, scratched and bruised as I was after this past week!  But what a wonderful opportunity to work with a group of really talented and fun people from all different walks of life.  Not only was the crew composed of people from all over the US, but there were interior designers, landscape designers, floral designers, carpenters, and artists.  Initially, I was excited to simply handle so many incredible exotic plants.  I never expected to find such camaraderie!  Special thanks to Todd Pope, the show director (you really killed it), and my teammates Matt and Bradford.

]]><![CDATA[Announcing 3rd collaboration with Native Foods Café]]>Mon, 02 Jan 2012 20:56:38 -0600http://www.amanda-paulson.com/1/post/2012/01/announcing-3rd-collaboration-with-native-foods-caf.htmlI'm pleased to announce my third collaboration with Native Foods Café as their Resident Artist!  Their final Chicago location opens tomorrow in the Loop at 218 S Clark.  

Over the past month, I've been the crazed artist in a dirty apron, moving among the throngs of impetuous construction workers, brash delivery men, and wide-eyed newly hired cooks and servers.  I've navigated some pretty treacherous conditions, including painting a mural in an unheated restaurant without running water or bathrooms, and with doors being continually opened to let in the blasting Chicago winter wind and cold.  Yes, my paint did freeze a little bit.  Yes, I did freeze a little bit.  But did I get it done?  You bet I did. 

The place is officially beautified.  You can find 12 oversized chalkboard illustrations and 2 large wall murals amongst other signage at the Loop Native Foods Café, all done by yours truly.  Go!  Enjoy!  And try the delicious vegan food too!
